Camp has received a blessing in the way of a donation. Now we need helpers to bring it home!

A business in Maryville called “Thunder World” recently went out of business and has generously donated thousands of dollars worth of equipment to Camp Ba Yo Ca. There are batting cages, go-carts and track that must be disassembled and transported up to camp. We need able bodied helpers with tools, trucks and trailers to assist with this project. The dates for this work are:

Saturday, May 12, and Saturday May 19, meeting at 9:00 am

Thunder World building is now a church called Foothills Church. This is where we will meet for disassembly and transport.

1. Go south on Highway 129 (Alcoa Highway) past the Airport, take the right fork and continue on 129 toward Maryville/Atlanta.
2. At Home Depot (on the right, at a traffic light) turn right and continue on 129 to Lamar Alexander Parkway (McDonalds on the corner) Turn right.
3. The Church (former Thunder World) will be a mile or two on your right. (Did you notice everything was on the right?)

St. John’s Good Friday service will include a reading of the Passion Gospel, reflections, and prayers. Light lunch follows in the Great Hall. Music will include the opening solo from Dubois’ The Seven Last Words of Christ and a soprano solo composed by Richard Hageman. The hymns and vocal solos will be accompanied by oboe, cello, string bass and organ.

The Knoxville Nativity Pageant invites you to participate in the Choir Rehearsals will be held in the choir suite at Central Baptist Church of Bearden, 6300 Deane Hill Dr. from 7-9pm on Tuesday Nov. 15th, 29th and Dec. 6th.  Registration is from 6-7pm each rehearsal night in the Welcome Center.

Leaving Iowa, by Tim Clue and Spike Manton, is a hilarious, sentimental comedy about family, family relationships, and family vacations. It is the story of a writer who returns home and decides to finally take his father’s ashes to his childhood home, as requested. But when Don discovers Grandma’s house is now a grocery store, he begins traveling across Iowa searching for a proper resting place for his father. This father-and-son road trip shifts smoothly from the present to Don’s memories of the annual, torturous vacations of his childhood. This play is a postcard to anyone who recognizes that we are given an earthly family to teach us that a perfect father/son relationship may never occur this side of Heaven, but these “ties that bind” do give us a glimpse of our Heavenly Father’s love. As Mom says, “Follow your father, sweetheart.” (Recommended for ages 12+)

The one-hour performance starts in darkness. Please be sure to arrive early to avoid having to find seats in the dark. Children are welcome at this family-friendly performance. For the Sunday performance, part of section N is reserved for the deaf and hearing impaired.

I am inviting everyone the opportunity to help out people who are alone at Christmas time. We minister to the disabled, elderly, and near-elderly individuals on Christmas day by providing a hot meal, gifts, music, and the singing of Christmas carols that bring joy to their hearts. This rich tradition has been going on for over thirty years, previously known as Knoxville Inner City United for People (KICCUP) with donations that come in from all denominations that believe in Christ as our Lord and Savior. On the average, 250-300 people are served a hot meal on Christmas day. For this event, we provide round-trip transportation to Central United Methodist Church of Knoxville, for more than 10 low income and assisted living facilities in our community. As you can imagine, this is a massive undertaking and volunteers in excess of 100, show up year after year to serve without hesitation.

There are several ways in which you can become involved:

• Make a monetary donation (please make the check out to Central United Methodist Church)
• Volunteer to serve at the Christmas dinner by signing up on the attached list
• Purchase a relatively inexpensive gift(s) and deliver it/them to the church during the week of Christmas. For men: Suspenders, stretch belts, socks, playing cards, billfolds, slippers, toboggans, combs, brushes, shampoo, shaving cream, disposable razors, after shave, cologne, ties, handkerchiefs, small inexpensive Christmas decoration, and candy. For Women: Pantyhose (queen size), knee high hose, warm stretch gloves, perfume, lipstick, powder, nail polish, nail polish remover, brushes, combs, hand and face cream, shampoo, costume jewelry, slippers, scarves,  small inexpensive Christmas decoration, make-up, and candy.

Just a reminder to wrap Women’s gifts using colored paper and Men’s in white paper. Please drop the gifts off the week of Christmas at Central United Methodist Church [click for map]. We also need church vans for low capacity transportation. Churches that have already donated we are most grateful, churches that are undecided we encourage you to participate in a wide spread community effort to help feed our people who are alone at Christmas time. 

This would not be possible without churches uniting together to share the financial burden. It brings joy to people, alone at Christmas time, knowing that people care and they are immensely grateful. Thank you for your donation.

Close out the year with a bang at First Night Knoxville 2010, our New Year’s Eve celebration of the arts in downtown Knoxville.  This fun, family-friendly event features 10 different stages of entertainment, a childrens’ festival, inflatables and food, all in an alcohol-free environment that is fun for all ages.  The First Night Admission Button, available at all Pilot locations,  gets you into all the venues for only $10 in advance, $15 the day of the event. Join us on Wednesday, December 2nd at 12 p.m. in the East Tennessee History Center Auditorium, 601 S. Gay Street as Dr. Bill Shiell, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church, leads a discussion on Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture by Ellen Ruppel Shell.

Shell tackles more than just discount culture in this wide-ranging book that argues that the American drive toward bargain-hunting and low-price goods has a hidden cost in lower wages for workers and reduced quality of goods for consumers. In the book’s most involving passages, Shell deftly analyzes the psychology of pricing and demonstrates how retailers manipulate subconscious bargain triggers that affect even the most knowing consumers. The author urges shoppers to consider spending more and buying locally, but acknowledges the inevitability of globalization and the continuation of trends toward efficient, cost-effective production.

“Cheap addresses our need for more stuff by challenging our assumptions about discounts,” says Dr. Shiell. “The book says that just because something is on sale does not make it a good value. During the shopping season, this book asks us to look beyond the sale price and examine how our purchases reflect our values.” 

Bring your lunch if you like; reading the book is not required.

Immaculate Conception Catholic Church is pleased to announce a new Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, providing monthly music offerings to IC parishioners and the Knoxville community. The debut concert of this new series will feature the Knoxville Brassworx Company, and will take place on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 2:00pm in the main church hall.

The Knoxville Brassworx Company is a professional brass quintet, consisting of members Sarah Chumney Fellenbaum and Joel Tillman, trumpets, Robert Owen, horn, Sam Chen, trombone, and Sean Greene, tuba, and will perform works by Bach, Gabrielli, Fats Waller, Ewazen and others. Also, during the program, they will collaborate with Immaculate Conception’s new Director of Music Ministry, Karl Jacob, in works for brass quintet and organ.
Admission to the concert is free, and open to the general public. Please join us for our exciting new Sunday Afternoon Concert Series, featuring the Knoxville Brassworx Company.
