Peace in Our World

When Jesus was born, the angels sang, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). This is more than a song. It’s a message to herald what Jesus’ life was all about. He came to bring glory to God and peace to everyone that has the favor of God.

John 1:8 says that when the word became flesh and dwelt among us, “We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” His life brought glory to God, especially as He went to the cross and gave His life for the sins of the world.

But His life was about more than “glory to God in the highest.” He was also about peace on earth. Isaiah said that He came as the Prince of Peace. He’s the answer to troubled and restless hearts. Through his blood we have peace with God. He broke down the dividing wall between people of different races and tribes, making the two one through his sacrifice on the cross.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end” (Isaiah 9:6-7). His peace will win in the end. It’s going to increase.

But the way that happens is through you and me. He’s called us to be people of peace. He’s called us to resist division and discord, whether that happens in conversation, online, in the workplace or in our homes or church.

Therefore we strive to maintain unity in the church and also work to bring healing to our world.

When we do that, we fulfill Jesus’ words: ”Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

There are two ways we seek to bring peace in our world.

First, we pray for peace. We pray for local, national, and international needs. We believe that prayer has an impact (James 5:16).

Second, we work for peace. First Baptist engages in a variety of mission efforts that help others find peace with God and ease their suffering.

Those ministries include:

  • CareFirst Homeless Outreach
  • FISH Food Pantry
  • The Food Co-Op
  • Coffee and Community Outreach
